How ATHENA arrived in Nashville

About the Speaker:
An eighth generation Nashvillian, Susan Allen Huggins graduated from Donelson High school.  She earned a B.S. degree in Business Education from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in 1973 and joined Jack Daniel Distillery that same year.  Susan was Director of Marketing Information Systems & Communication Services when she left Jack Daniel’s in 1987 to start Direct Link, a full-service direct mail firm and certified Woman-owned Business, which she continues to run.

She is past Chair of the YWCA Board of Directors and has been a class member, Logistics Chair and has served on the Selection Committee of Leadership Nashville. 

She currently serves on the boards and Executive Committees of the Nashville Sports Council, the Women’s Fund of the Community Foundation of Middle TN, St. Mary’s Sewanee and Senior Citizens, Inc.

Other boards she either has served on or currently serves on include the Downtown Rotary Club, CABLE, the Cumberland Valley Girl Scout Council, Bishop & Council of the Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee and the Nashville Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners.  She is also a past President of WIN “Women in Numbers” and the Executive Women’s Golf Association.

A past President of CABLE, Susan won that organization’s Spirit of Leadership Award in 1999 and was their ATHENA nominee in 1997 and will be their nominee again in 2008.  She has also been nominated three other times for the ATHENA Award by other women’s organizations.  In 2002, she was inducted into the YWCA’s Academy for Women of Achievement.  While in high school, she earned the Girl Scout’s Curved Bar Award which is now known as the Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve.

Susan is active in St. David’s Episcopal Church, where she has served as Senior Warden of their Vestry and sings in the choir.  To relax Susan enjoys reading, golf, walking and traveling.  She has been married to her husband, Bill, since 1977 and they have two grown children, Ruth and Allen, and a daughter-in-law, Maggie.
