About Dr. Phyllis Qualls-Brooks

Dr. Phyllis Qualls-Brooks is the 2016 NASHVILLE Cable ATHENA recipient. She is a highly sought -after speaker and presenter, and a scholar in women’s and minority issues as well as a communication’s expert. She served as Executive Director of The Tennessee Economic Council on Women from January 1, 2012 until June 30, 2016. She has extensive experience in both state and federal government, education and communications.
She currently serves as Deputy Clerk with the Davidson County Clerk’s Office. She is also an adjunct professor at Belmont University in the College of Education. Furthermore she mentors female youth and professional women individually and through several organizations.
She has worked tirelessly to address the economic needs of Tennessee women and assess their economic status in order to improve the lives of women, children and families. In her role as executive director, she developed and advocated solutions to barriers women face in order to help them achieve economic autonomy, producing research on such issues as Violence Against Women and Gender Bias in the Workplace.
Most recently, Dr. Qualls-Brooks was one of three individuals named “Person of the Year” by the Nashville Tennessee Tribune Newspaper. She has also been named the Outstanding Community Leader from the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Alpha Delta Omega Chapter (December 2016). She is a member of the Women’s Fund, an outreach of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. She was also inducted into her high school Hall of Honor, July, 2016. She is a graduate of Alexander High School in Brookhaven, MS. Woman of Legend and Merit Award from Tennessee State University (March, 2015). Additionally, she was inducted into the prestigious 2014 Academy of Women of Achievement presented by the YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee. The consummate professional was also the Nashville CABLE, “Power of Inclusion” award recipient, presented in May, 2013 to an individual who walks the talk with a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. She was the 2011 recipient of the Women of Influence Award from the Nashville Business Journal. She was selected to serve as a Vision 2020 National Delegate for Tennessee, which is a program administered by the Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine to achieve women’s economic and social equality. She is a member of NASHVILLE Cable, the largest organization for women’s networking and leadership in Middle Tennessee and served as the 2015-2016 Vice-Chair of Programs. She continually strengthened the monthly program offerings for this organization. Additionally, in July 2013, she was inducted into Consortium of Doctors, Ltd., a national organization devoted to the uplifting and promoting of women and children in all areas of life. She chaired the logistics committee for the national conference in Nashville, July 2014, and was voted Co-Director in July, 2016.
