Supporting, developing and honoring women leaders  |  Inspiring women to achieve their full potential  |  Creating balance in leadership worldwide

Join RutherfordCABLE for this very special evening with Athena International founder, Martha Mayhood Mertz, presenting.

The ATHENA Award®, named for the strong, enlightened goddess, goes to individuals who excel in their professions, give back to their communities and help raise up other leaders, especially women.

In 1982, in Lansing, Michigan, Martha Mayhood Mertz founded ATHENA International, a non-profit organization that seeks to support, develop and honor women leaders.  The program inspires women to reach their full potential and strives to create balance in leadership worldwide.

Prior to that, Mertz began to develop her vision for ATHENA International while serving on the Board of Directors of the Lansing Michigan Regional Chamber of Commerce.  As the only woman on the Board, she quickly recognized the Chamber’s boardroom did not reflect the reality of the business community.  Over time, she noticed, and began to articulate, that women’s strengths and contributions are unique.  Further, she believed that for those strengths to be valued and not dismissed, they must be publicly acknowledged.

Today, ATHENA International is a global program.  Since the program’s inception, more than 6,000 awards have been presented in over 500 communities in the United States, Canada, China, Russia, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.

The ATHENA Leadership Model® was developed through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and identifies eight distinct attributes that are reflective of women’s contributions to leadership.

ATHENA Leadership Model®

Supporting, Honoring and Developing Women Leaders

Authentic Self

Celebration and Joy

Collaboration

Courageous Acts

Fierce Advocacy

Giving Back

Learning

Relationships

These eight personal traits are combined with the strongest aspects of traditional leadership---defined as taking risks, assertiveness and hard work---prepare women to be successful leaders in the 21st century.  The ATHENA Leadership Model® meets the needs of emerging leaders and speaks convincingly to women leaders who will head the organizations of the future.
